South Square mall was torn down in 2003. This site now contains a Sam's Club and Super Target, among other stores and restaurants.
South Square Mall opened in 1975 with Belk-Leggett, JC Penney, and Montgomery Ward as anchors. It also had the first food court in the area. In 1985, Montgomery Ward closed to be replaced by Ivey's, which later became Dillard's. When The Streets at Southpoint opened in 2002, Belk and JC Penney left, along with other stores. The mall stayed open for less than a year afterward.
