  There was just a two-room school building at Chaurmania when I studied there during the years 1947-49. Our teacher was , firstly, 'Chanariyan Pandit', as he used to be called. Many interesting stories were related about him, mostly about how he used to wheedle the students' parents into lending him cash or kind. I chanced to have a fleeting view of him later in 1954 at Berinag when I was studying in High School there. The other teacher who replaced Chanriyan Pandit was Himmat Singh, a fine teacher. He belonged to Rai-agar where his elder brother was the post master. I often used to visit the post office from Khanatari, my village.
