This was originally Charles Washington's (the first president's brother's) home. The house became the town's only proper tavern in the early 1790s. The tap room has a reconstructed bar cage and quite a collection of pewter. "Tavern Wenches" (acrtresses/guides dressed as old-time barmaids) provide visitors with an interpretation of 18th century tavern life. The tavern is filled with period furnishings and stories of early life in Fredericksburg. Much of the woodwork in the tavern is original.

Some of the boxwoods planted by Mrs. Washington along a walkway that is said once to have extended all the way to Ken-more, is still standing, and other plants that knew her care are still to be seen. The interior and exterior of the house has been restored. It was here that Mrs. Washington died in 1799.
