George Washington's mother, Mary, lived here for the last few years of her life. She wanted to live close to her daughter Betty Fielding Lewis who lived at nearby Kenmore. President-elect Washington stopped here to receive his mother's blessing before traveling to his inauguration in New York. Among the most memorable of Mary's belongings in and around the house are a full-length mirror she called her favourite dressing mirror and a sundial which still keeps time in the garden.
The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
