Laid down in the early 1960s as the commercial cargo ship SS Mormacsaga, this ship was aquired by the Maritime Administration in 1980 and converted into a Modular Cargo Delivery System ship. Renamed SS Cape Johnson, she was placed into a layberth at Wilmington, NC with her sistership SS Cape Juby (T-AK-5077).

The Cape Johnson remained homported at Wilmington serving as one of six members of the Miltary Sealift Command's Modular Cargo Delivery System Ready Reserve Force Ship fleet. Relocated in the early 2000's to Cheatham Annex, VA, the the Cape Johnson relocated again to the Reserve Fleet at Fort Eustis in 2007 where she was downgraded from the RRF and placed into Category D Reserve as a parts source for her active sisterships. As the other members of the Cape J Class were similarly downgraded during the next few years, the Cape Johnson was formally placed on the "Stripping" list in early 2011 and subsequently sold for scrapping to All Star Metals of Brownsville, TX on September 15th, 2017. The vessel departed the JRRF under tow on October 25th, 2017 and was declared scrapped on June 5th, 2018.
