Home to the 200" Hale telescope. The Hale Telescope doubled the size of the then largest telescope (the 100" Hooker on Mount Wilson). It revolutionized astronomy. Also here is the 48" Schmidt Camera (now called the Samuel Oschin Camera) which was purpose-built for the National Geographic Palomar Obervatory Sky Survey (POSS) 1948-1958. The POSS project was as important for the advancement of science as the larger, more famous instrument.

Great place to visit. Nice drive up the mountain with lots of overlooks. The visitor center is interesting and free! You must see the Hale telescope to believe just how large it really is - amazing.
