"UNITED MALIKA", a 387.8 foot reefer vessel with a cargo of fish, ran aground in a remote location called "Cap Blanc" near the shore of Nouadhibou, Mauritania, on August 4th, 2003. The 17-member crew was rescued by the Mauritanian Navy.

  • I met Micheline on this Cape in 1973. Back then the Cape was still shared with Spain as part of Espanol Sahara. Basically she smuggled me into Mauritania under the pretext of going into Nouadhibou for a glass of sweet tea. As a Yank, I did not have an entry Visa. She was French, none required. The Douane basically let me go into town saying, sure you can go, there's no way out of there, so you need to come back this way. Little did we know then what lay ahead. We found a way out.
