 Second World War 1939-1945, shipwreck

U-86 was a Type VIIB Unterseeboot in service with the Kriegsmarine during the Second World War and after her July 1941 commissioning, she sailed on her first war patrol in December 1941.

U-86's range and speed made her a capable cross-ocean boat, and during the first year of her service she spent 3 patrols and several months of the US Eastern Seaboard. As 1943 progressed, her patrols became more centered off the coast of Spain and Bay of Biscay, though on one patrol she sailed as far South as the Gold Coast of Africa.

Sailing from Breast on November 11th 1943 to begin her 8th war patrol, the U-86 reported to her Flotilla Commander on November 28th that she had located and was tracking a large Allied convoy heading towards the Mediterranean Sea. After shadowing the convoy for the following day, the U-86 was picked up by Sonar operators aboard the British Destroyers HMS Tumult and HMS Rocket, which were escorting the convoy. The two British ships moved to attack, and despite her evasive maneuvers, the U-86 was sunk at this location on November 29th, 1943 with all hands by combined depth charge attacks.
