Wreck of USS Comte de Grasse (DD-974)

USA / New Jersey / Strathmere /
military, shipwreck, destroyer (ship), United States Navy

USS Comte De Grasse was the 12th member of the Spruance Class of Destroyers and commissioned into US Navy Service in 1978 as a member of the US Atlantic Fleet, homeported in Norfolk. She would serve out of this port for the following 20 years, making several Med & Caribbean deployments for exercises before she decommissioned in 1998.

Following her decommissioning she was towed to NISMF Philadelphia where she was used as a parts hulk for her active sisterships and was eventually selected as a target ship for fleet exercises in 2006. The end for the USS Comte De Grasse came on June 7th, 2006 when she was sunk at this location after absorbing numerous 5-inch and small caliber rounds, as well as ordinance dropped from Navy F-14 Tomcats in one of their last sorties before being retired. The Comte De Grasse now lies in 2000 fathoms.
