Originally part of the land owned by Thomas Lee in the 18th century. Belmont was one of its original four divisions (along with Coton, Farmwell, and Forest Tract). Belmont plantation was built by Ludwell Lee from 1799-1802. The plantation held prominence for many years and several notable individuals are known to have visited it (including James Madison). The manor house still stands as clubhouse for the Belmont Country Club development.

When the W&OD railroad was built, there was a station at "Belmont Park", to the southwest of Belmont Plantation. This area became a resort area.

In recent times, this area has been in decline since the loss of the railroad. In 1995, Toll Brothers, Inc purchased the manor house. Soon after a wave of development has overtaken the area, following the development in Ashburn. The most prominent developments in the area are Belmont Country Club and Belmont Greene.
