Stony Island Ridge is a higher limestone feature that stood far enough (20 feet, 6 m) above the surrounding flat terrain that early explorers called it an island and used it as a landmark. It gave its name to Stony Island Avenue, a major north-south street in Chicago and the southern suburbs, which passes just to the west. It is 606 feet (184.7 m) above sea level.

  • Supposedly this is an exposed, fossilized coral reef from about 400,000,000 years ago.
