Construction of the Tuttle Creek Dam was given impetus by the Great Flood of 1951, which inundated downtown Manhattan, KS. Although the project met with heavy opposition from local residents who would be forced to relocate, the dam was completed in 1962, creating Tuttle Creek Lake. Construction work began in 2005 to strengthen the dam so it could withstand a moderate to strong earthquake.
