NRG, the owner of the Encina Power Plant, filed plans with the California Energy Commission to increase power output by 200 megawatts by mid-2010. They also plan to rename the complex to the "Carlsbad Energy Center." Three old, water-cooled, generators (about 100 megawatts each) will be replaced with air-cooled , more efficient units.
