The Heartland Cafe (Chicago, Illinois) | restaurant, veganism

USA / Illinois / Evanston / Chicago, Illinois / North Glenwood Avenue, 7000
 restaurant, cafe, veganism

Good organic and alternative based food, with live folk and alternative music. Serving hippies for three decades now, lately it's been attracting the Whole Foods type of folks as the neighborhood becomes gentrified. Still, it's true to it's core values, which are definitely left of center. Despite a lack of of beef items on the menu, some of the beef substitutes come extremely close to the real thing here- even today's hippies and vegetarians have a higher level of taste. To those food lovers who disagree, don't let politics or fear of soy keep you away from a good meal. At the very least Heartland Cafe is moving into a the category of long time Chicago neighborhood institution, and such should be appreciated for surviving the times, with core values, and core products intact.

Don't be confused by above, this place is not a vegetarian cafe. There is plenty of meat on the menu -- as much as or even more than straight vegetarian meals.

The heartland is awesome with great live music and food. They have more than ample vegetarian options for a restaurant of their kind.
