A conspicuous waypoint on the Mormon and Oregon Trails, Scotts Bluff represents the transition from the Great Plains to the arid high plains of Colorado and Wyoming. This is the region Horace Greeley referred to when he said: "Go west young man go west."
Scotts Bluff rests in the wide fertile valley of the North Platte River in which one can see strip farming, pump irrigated circles, conventional fields, and irrigated fields fed by up river dams. Above the valley are the arid sand hills and bad lands of western Nebraska.
