This is a site of American Eagles Mine, which was the deepest (1540 ft) and highest (10,570 ft) gold mine in the Cripple Creek mining district. Many of the mine structures (including the wooden headframe) have been preserved and restored.
The overlook provides excellent views of the present day open pit mining operations, as well as Collegiate Mountains and Pikes Peak.
as of end 2016 the overlook was permanently closed to the public.
