The Cresson mine is operated by Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company, which is jointly owned by Newmont Mining Corporation It is currently the only operating gold mine in Colorado and produces around 300,000 ounces of gold each year.
The Cresson Mine originally opened in the 1890s as an underground mine and worked into the 1950s. The current open pit opened in 1995.
