Formerly known as the Santa Rita mine and operated as early as the 18th century by Spaniards, the Chino Copper Mine began working its large open pit in 1901, and at one point was the largest open pit mine in the world. The nearby mining town of Santa Rita relocated numerous times to make way for the pit's expansion - eventually to the point of complete destruction in 1957.
In 1982 Kennecott Copper sold the mine and Hurley smelter to Phelps Dodge, which in 2007 was taken over by current owner Freeport-McMoRan.
