The largest freshwater body within the state of New Jersey - its size measures 4 sq miles (10.4 sq km) in area. Originally two small ponds, dams were erected in the 18th century to provide water for a mill and in the 19th century to provide water for the Morris Canal. Had a large ice harvesting industry up until 1930. From the 19th to mid-20th centuries the lake was surrounded by hotels and campgrounds making it a major vacation area until suburbia moved in starting in the 1960's. Popular attractions on the lake include the Hopatcong State Park, The Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum, and The Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club.
