The Roswell Incident involved the recovery of materials near Roswell, New Mexico, USA, on July 7, 1947, which has become the subject of intense speculation, rumor and questioning. There are widely divergent views on what actually happened and passionate debate about what evidence can be believed. The United States military maintains that what was recovered was a top-secret research balloon that had crashed. Many UFO proponents believe the wreckage was of a crashed alien craft and that the military covered up the craft's recovery. The incident has turned into a widely-recognized and referred to pop culture phenomenon, and for some, Roswell is synonymous with UFOs. It likely ranks as the most famous alleged UFO incident.

  • If there weren't that'd be an awful waste of space. ~Carl Sagan
  • People are so insistent that the government is trying to hide something that when the most logical and realistic answer is given we find it impossible to accept.
  • if you look into the facts of this event, it only transpired because the rancher, Mac Brazel, saw buzzards flying overheard and went to investigate - believing he lost some cattle. Well, he didn't find cattle, and buzzards aren't known to eat weather balloons. So yes, the most logical and realistic answer may well be what the government's own story originally was, that they recovered a crashed disc.
  • I can't seem to find any reference to "buzzards flying overhead" which prompted the rancher to investigate. Do you have a link to a source for that claim?
  • No buzzards...I know the story very well...my wife is the granddaughter of Maj. Jesse Marcel
  • What is the rectangular purple shading around "crashed saucer?" box? That is, did a Wikimapia user do it or is the ground actually purple there?
