This is mining lease ML4748 which is for Newlands Coal East Creek South Pit which is owned by the NCA Joint Venture between Xstrata Coal with 55%, Itochu Coal Resources with 35% and Sumitomo with 10%. Xstrata Coal Queensland is the operator and Xstrata Coal Queensland is owned by Glencore Coal. Newlands was developed in 1981 with mining operations commencing in 1983 from open cut pits and underground mining starting in 1998. Coal is mined from a single coal seam, the Upper Newlands which has an average thickness of 6 metres. The original capacity before underground mining began was approximately 4 million tonnes per year but when underground mining came on stream the capacity rose to in excess of 10 million tonnes per year. Measured and indicated coal resources for all mining lease areas is around 413 million tonnes.
