The Saraji open-cut mine is owned by the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) whose beneficial owners are BHP Billiton Ltd and Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd. The mine is located 165 km south southwest of Mackay and is operated by BMA. Low volatile coking coal is exported to Asia and Europe. Saleable coal production is approximately 5 Mtpa. Measured and Indicated coal resources are 648 million tonnes (2003). Reported workforce for Saraji in 2003 is 438.

Saraji Mine is located 24km south of Peak Downs mine and 213km south west of the Hay Point coal export terminal.

Construction of the Saraji open-cut coking coal mine began in late 1972 and production began in the latter part of 1974. Saraji has a current production capacity of eight million tonnes of high grade coking coal a year.
