This Mining Lease 70489 which 100% owned by Waratah Coal which is part of the Mineralogy Group and owned by Mineralogy Pty Ltd. The lease falls under Permit ID 112367 with an official legal name of NORTH ALPHA MINING LEASE, and has an area of 104892 hectares with the legal authorized holder name registered as Waratah Coal Pty Ltd. It was lodged in November 30, 2012 when planning was underway for the projects. Waratah has 2 projects within the boundary of ML 70489, the Alpha North Coal Project and the Carmichael East Coal Project. On July 17, 2015 Waratah announced that the plans for Mining Lease 70489 was approved by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines on 5 June 2015.

The Alpha North Coal Project is located on the south portion (east and west) of ML 70489 and is comprised of 4 underground longwall operations as well as 2 open cut operations. Ultimate production is projected to be 56 Mtpa of run-of-mine (ROM) from a JORC coal resource of 3.45 Billion Tonnes. The thermal coal quality is very high as energy coal with a ranking of 5900 k/cal (adb), 5500 k/cal (NAR). After coal is prepared it will be shipped using a rail spur network to the Galilee Coal Project rail facilities.

The Carmichael Coal Project is located on the north portion of ML 70489 and is comprised of underground longwall mining operations with link directly to the Alpha North infrastructure. Initial production is projected at 9 Mtpa from estimated resources of around 9 Billion tonnes. Coal quality is the same as the Alpha North Coal Project.
