Collinsville is an conventional open cut mine producing medium volatile hard coking coal and medium volatile thermal coal for coking and steaming. The mine is capable of Run of Mine (ROM) coal production of 6.0 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) which is exported and sold to the domestic market. Measured and Indicated coal resources for Collinsville are 196 million tonnes.

The potential of the coalfields was recognized as early as 1866 and underground mining began in 1919. Mount Isa Mines got involved in Collinsville by acquiring an interest in 1952, and thus gaining full control in 1972. Mout Isa was acquired by Xstrata in 2003 and then Glencore and Xstrata officially merged May 2, 2013.

Glencore closed the mine on September 1, 2013 as part of restructuring of coal operation to change the mine to an owner-operator business model, rather than contractor based. Leighton Holdings subsidiary Theiss had operated the mine for about 17 years. The mine plan was also changed to allow for larger equipment to increase productivity. The restriction within the mine's CHPP was addressed allowing capacity to be increased. The mine was then reopend the mine at the end of January 2014 and by the end of July 2014 had produced its first millionth tonne.
