The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was concluded on February 2, 1848, officially ending the war with Mexico. It provided that the new international border between the two countries be established by a United States and Mexican Boundary Commission. Both commissions surveyed and located the initial borderline at Border Field.

In the 1930s the property was developed as a US Navy outlying landing field (NOLF), and later was expanded to training activities. In 1961, the gunnery training activities ceased and the Border Field facility was transferred to the Navy Electronics Laboratory. The NEL transferred the property to the State of California at an unknown date.
