power station, thermal power station
Greenwich Power Station was built between 1902 and 1910 to provide power to the London tram network. It later became a backup power source for the London Underground.
The station was originally fueled by coal unloaded from boats at the adjacent pier. This continued until the 1960s, when the steam plant was replaced by Rolls Royce gas turbine generators which ran on oil. Gas is now the main source of power.
The chimneys, originally 250 feet high, were cut down to 182 feet when the Royal Observatory up the hill complained of obstructed sight lines.
