  • this one of a few sunken volcanic craters in Metro Auckland
  • Originally this wasn't a basin, but when the railway line was built across one side, floodgates were also installed. This meant that water could be contained within the basin independent of the tides. The basin can now be used for watersports (mainly sailing and water-skiing) year round, however if the seawater is left too long algae breeds on the seafloor. Then when the water is finally drained to let the algae dry out and die, it causes an unpleasant smell as it decomposes in the sun for the weeks taken to kill the organisms.
