Built in 1927 and designed by civil engineer Philip Bush, the 250,000-square-foot Del Monte Warehouse was part of the first phase of construction for the Encinal Terminals. The terminal, served by the Alameda Belt Line (built in 1918), was constructed by the California Packing Corporation -- better known as Del Monte -- for storage of its canned goods. Canned goods were stored here until they could be shipped out, either via cargo ship or rail.

The Encinal Terminals complex included a berthing basin for its Alaska Packers Association subsidiary (once the world's largest salmon-packing concern) and other cargo ships, three dockside transit sheds, and a railside warehouse. It was eventually put out of business in the 1960s due to competition from the container shipping terminals at the Port of Oakland.
