The village of Elmley Castle takes its name from this Norman castle, constructed soon after 1086 by Robert d'Abitot, and built on the site of an earlier Iron Age fort. The castle eventually passed into the hands of the Earls of Warwick, who already had a much larger castle at the eponymous town, and Elmley fell into disuse. By 1540 the castle was reported to be "uncovered and in decay".

Building stone has been removed from the site on many occasions, including the rebuilding of Pershore Great Bridge after it was blown up during the Civil War.

Today, only the castle's earthworks remain.
