Human sacrifice associated with cenotes was a cultural practice with a long duration in Yucatan. In historical documents different forms of ritual sacrifice are recorded in these water bodies characteristic of northern Yucatan. It is interesting that in 93 % of the sacrifices mentioned in documents Homún - Hocabá Sotuta and removal of the heart was performed and 79 % was deposited in a cenote. These documents victims predominantly between 6 and 12 years and young adult males are mentioned. Studies indicate that the skeletal sample from the Sacred Cenote at Chichén Itzá match ages and sex of the individuals described in these chronicles. The study of historical sources , coupled with the iconography and archaeological evidence shows that in ancient Maya society human sacrifices had particular characteristics related to the physical context and time in which they occurred. During the Classic and Postclassic periods , iconographic representations of human sacrifice and violence at the time of death increased in the northern Maya lowlands . A clear example of this is found in Chichén Itzá , in ethnohistorical sources are detailed human sacrifices associated with its main cenote.
