Early settlers of the county noticed that people who drank the milk given by cows who grazed on the slopes of this mountain got sick and some died. A certain kind of weed that only grows on this mountain was the culprit. They built a fence around the mountain.

It is also said that the ghost of a woman haunts the mountain and can be heard giving blood-curdling screams. Some have theorized this is the sound of a panther, as sightings of these have been reported nearby though they are not native to the Southeastern US.

It also has a firetower on top.
