At this site is Radarstation North, one of the two Medium Power Radars of the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF/KLu).

The 3D-radar type Medium Power Radar (MPR) at Wier is a replacement for the Navigationstation NS "NS" and a back-up for the CRC at Nieuw-Milligen. The station was founded in 1974 and formally accepted for service on 15 March 1976. The station is fully operational.
The 3D-radar in Wier was made by Thomson-CSF. The system is up-to-date, and is modified in the 1990s, which greatly enhanced the system. Technically the system is at the end of its life and needs replacement in the near future (2013-15). The present ARES system weights 12 tonnes and measures 16m (l) x 9.5m (h). The radar area is 94 m². The radar rotates electrically at 6 rpm and operates at the S-band. The effective range is
approx. 450 km. The dome is made of modified synthetic material and is composed of 180 panels. The radome is situated at a height of 33 m, has a diameter of 20 m and sustains wind speeds up to 250 km/h.
