 city, county seat

Dalhart is a city located in Dallam and Hartley counties in the U.S. state of Texas, and the county seat of Dallam County. The population was 7,930 at the 2010 census.

Dalhart is named for its location along the border of Dallam and Hartley counties. The city was established in 1901 at the site where the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad and the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad intersected. The city replaced Texline as the Dallam County Seat in 1903.

The city was hit hard by the Dust Bowl in the 1930s; the area would frequently experience "black blizzards", which would appear suddenly and bring violent turbulent skies that blocked out the sun. In August of 1934, Dalhart became the site of one of the first three erosion-control demonstration projects in Texas, sponsored by the Federal Land Bank, and the first to be devoted specifically to wind erosion.

Dalhart remains a vital agribusiness center for a large area of Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. Processing plants, schools, hospitals/clinics, a nursing home, and a bottling plant are all present in the city. Dalhart Municipal Airport, formerly known as Dalhart Army Air Field, was established in 1942. Three U.S. Highways, 87, 35, and 54, converge at Dalhart. Since 1936, the city has been the home of the XIT Ranch Reunion and Rodeo which is held every August.
