Caldey Island has been inhabited by monks since the 6th century.
The Reformed Cistercians (Trappists), now in residence, came in 1929 from Scourmont Abbey in Belgium, currently 15 monks. The monastic guest house is within the monastery enclosure and has been set aside for those males who, wishing to share more closely in the community’s quiet life of prayer and work.
