castle, motte-and-bailey castle
Also known as Rayleigh Mount this motte and bailey fortress was founded by Sweyn of Essex, who managed to retain his land after the Conquests in 1086. The mound or 'motte' was set on a high ridge that commanded panoramic views and is also mentioned in the Domes day Book.
