Fountain of King Charles IV (Manila)

Philippines / National Capital Region / Manila
 statue, monument, fountain

This statue was cast at the maestranza or royal foundry (located at Fort Santiago) out of gratitude to Charles IV of Spain, who sent the smallpox vaccine to the Philippine Islands and other colonies of the Spanish Empire following the recovery of his daughter, Infanta María Luisa, from the illness.

The expedition, led by the royal physician, Dr Francisco Javier de Balmis, set out from La Coruña on 30 November 1803, arriving in Manila in 1806.

The statue now stands as part of a fountain in the middle of Plaza Roma, with the monarch's effigy facing Manila Cathedral.
