pantheon, Roman Empire, listed building / architectural heritage, historical building, Ancient Roman temple, 2nd century construction
Built about 125 AD in the reign of Hadrian, the Pantheon is one of the oldest massive concrete buildings in the world and the most well-preserved ancient Roman building in existence. Much of the facade has been worn away or melted down (bronze) over the nearly 2000 years since its construction. The massive doors are still used, despite being almost 20 centuries old.
The dome is larger than that of St. Peter's Basilica at 43.3m (142ft) in height and width. It holds the record for the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the history of architecture.
Originally built as a Roman temple to all gods (Pantheon literally meaning "Temple of all the gods), it was consecrated as an Roman Catholic Church in 608/09? AD., called Santa Maria ad Martyres,("St. Mary and the Martyrs" but informally known as "Santa Maria Rotonda.), and still functions as such.Since 1929, it has been the seat of the Military Ordinary(Bishop for the Military) of Italy. The church is served by ecclesiastical Canons.
