Buchtel High School opened in 1931 and was named after John R. Buchtel, one of Akron's leading industrialists and philanthropists and founder of the University of Akron. The school's mascot is the "Griffin" with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion, symbolizing pride, boldness, power and strength. In 2012 the high school and middle school combined under one roof to form the new Buchtel CLC.
