This important building started out as a 13th century fortified stone manor house, established by the Ferrers. The remains of the nearby Groby Castle were then absorbed in the construction of a fortified brick house, which stands in the bailey. Subsequent 15th century fortifications were never completed. At the entrance is a narrow three storey tower that has been incorporated into a late 16th century house.
