Founded by Hugh de Grantmesnilis, this is the site of the 11th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress. The oval motte was constructed over a stone building and the remains of the bailey, which was encased by a wide ditch and counterscarp bank is located to the east. The timber castle was dismantled in the late 1100s and a stone manor erected in the 13th century. Part of a wall remains close to the motte, with other stonework being used in the construction of the nearby 15th century Groby Old Hall.
