Bryant-Denny Stadium, located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is home to the University of Alabama Crimson Tide football team. It opened on September 28, 1929 and was originally named Denny Stadium in honour of George Hutchenson Denny. The name was amended in 1975 to honour coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. The stadium originally had a capacity of 12,000. In 1937, 6,000 seats were added along the east sideline, increasing capacity to 18,000. The stadium was further expanded to 25,000 in 1946, 43,000 in 1961 (along with a press box along the west sideline), and 60,000 in 1966. The first upper deck was added along the west sideline in 1988, adding 10,000 new seats for a capacity of 70,123.
In 1998, a second upper deck was added to the east side, raising capacity to 83,818. The 1998 expansion provided 10,000 additional bleacher seats and 81 skyboxes on two levels. In 1999, four additional skyboxes were added. Also added in the expansion were a scoreboard with video display capabilities in the south endzone, new light towers for the east side of the stadium, a new east side entrance tower, a brick facade, and reception areas for the Scholarship and A-Club level patrons.
From 2004-2006 the university spent $43,000,000 on an expansion of the North End Zone. An upper deck was added to the North End Zone area along with 38 skyboxes on three levels, which increased capacity to 92,138. Two large video screens were placed on each corner of the North End Zone and two LED ribbon screens were placed along the East and West upper deck facades.
Additions were made to the exterior of the stadium with the Walk of Champions, included in which are five bronze statues, one for each Alabama football coach who has led the Tide to a national championship. In addition, there are stones laid in the immediate pathway leading to the stadium recognising all of Alabama's SEC and national championship teams throughout the years. Finally, there are also two bronze statues of Alabama football players at the entrance to the North end zone that are holding a large Alabama flag, honouring the entire Alabama football program, which began in 1892.
A $65,600,000 expansion of the South End Zone took place from 2009 until 2010. It includes a two-level South Zone Club with 1,700 seats, 36 skyboxes on three levels, and an 8,500-seat upper deck. The stadium's audio/visual system was upgraded and two new video boards were added in both corners of the south end zone. The south scoreboard was dismantled to make way for the expansion.
In 2008, the visitors' locker room was named "The Fail Room" in honour of James M. Fail.
The current capacity of Bryant-Denny Stadium is 101,821, with 159 skyboxes.
