city, county seat
City with a population of 90,221 in 2008, fifth largest in Alabama. County seat of Tuscaloosa County. Site of the convergence of Indian trails and a Creek village at the fall line of the Black Warrior River. Settled by Americans after the War of 1812. The settlement was named in honor of semi-legendary Chief Tuskaloosa, a Catawba chief who fought against Spanish encroachment in what is now Alabama in the 16th century. Incorporated as a city by the Alabama territorial legislature in 1819. Served as the state capital from 1826 until 1846, when the capital was moved to Montgomery. The city suffered after the capital was moved. Raided and partially burned by Union troops in the last days of the Civil War.
