The Blackacre Nature Preserve and Historic Homestead is managed by the Blackacre Foundation, a 501(c)3, nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving a special piece of Kentucky's natural legacy and early settlement history for visitors of all ages. At Blackacre, nearly three hundred acres filled with rolling fields, forests, and streams surround the historic homestead, which lies at the heart of the Blackacre Nature Preserve. The preserve’s land use history integrates education, agriculture, nature and historic preservation with visitor programs, a few private residences, a neighborhood garden, and community activities.
Blackacre’s Moses Tyler Homestead, which dates to approximately 1785, lies at the heart of what was once the Edward Tyler farm. Today, the thousand acres that made up the Edward Tyler farm are included on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service as the Tyler Settlement Rural Historic District. The Moses Tyler Homestead is the only piece of this historic settlement that is available to the public.
The Homestead shelters an 18th-century stone cottage, springhouse, barn, and a pre-Civil War farmhouse, now open to the public as the Blackacre visitors’ center. Visitors can explore the double crib barn that served the neighboring Tyler families during early settlement and tour Blackacre’s springhouse and smokehouse.
Today, school field trips, summer camps, workshops, lectures, concerts, and many other programs allow visitors to learn in this place of natural and historic beauty. Visitors are welcome to enjoy Blackacre from 1-5 on Sundays in April, May, and June. Visitors can tour the walking trails, the homestead and explore the Appalachian-style double crib barn, the historic springhouse and the brick smokehouse. Guests are also welcome to watch the horses, cows and goats in the fields surrounding the homestead. Admission is free.
A member-supported organization, the Blackacre Foundation also plays host to parties, corporate events, family reunions, and other gatherings, which help sustain the work of the organization.
