Before 1975, Vietnam was divided in two, North Vietnam (or Socialist Republic of Vietnam) and South Vietnam (Democratic Republic of Vietnam). North Vietnam only maintained relations with its two major allies, the Soviet Union and the Communist Republic of China, while South Vietnam maintained relations with its two major allies, the United States of America and France. North Vietnam did not begin to emerge from international isolation until it withdrew its troops from Cambodia in 1989. After the defeat of United States of America in Vietnam War and the consolidation of North and South of Vietnam, the country changed its name officially to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on 2 July 1976.
Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (or North Vietnam) was established on 30 March 1973, after the signing of the Paris Peace Accords in Paris, France on 27 January 1973. At that time, Malaysia also has diplomatic relations with the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (or South Vietnam) with the establishment of the Malaysian Embassy in Saigon (the capital of South Vietnam). The Embassy was closed on 28 April 1975, before the fall of Saigon during the Vietnam War on 30 April 1975. Malaysia re-established full diplomatic ties with Vietnam in 1991.
