Swiss trading companies set up operations in Malaysia as long ago as the 19th century, and favourable conditions have encouraged investment there ever since. Today around 120 Swiss companies employ over 20,000 people in this country. There are also close contacts between Swiss and Malaysian universities. At diplomatic level the two countries have maintained contacts since 1963.
