These bases were developed in order to enhance the USAF's ability to conduct combat operations from the American mainland. As front line bases, the bare bases are well provisioned with bunkers and other defensive facilities and have the capability to support the USAF's aircraft during wartime.
During peacetime this Bare Base is maintained by a small caretaker staff drawn from the 49th Fighter Wing's Maintenance Group. Flying and support units are not permanently stationed at Bare Bases. The bases are, however, regularly activated during exercises with flying and support units deploying from other USAF bases to staff the base for the duration of the exercise.

  • good question! I also don't have the idea what does it stand for. Lack of information...
  • I know there's a German installation here- is this it? Are they even still stationed here?
  • Per wikipedia: 49th Materiel Maintenance Group: Maintains and deploys all equipment needed to build a "bare base" airfield. This must be it. Edits a-coming.
  • This is where the USA does international flight training for friendly nations. Including Germany. There is also an officer school down in Fort Bliss for foreign military officers.
