Theater

Greece / Kiklades / Mikonos /
theatre, archaeological site, 3rd century BC construction

Completed in the third century BC, it could seat over 5000 people. Most of the stage buildings are gone and the theater seating is fairly overgrown, but it's still easy to imagine how spectacular it must have been to see a performance in this setting. Of course during the latter Roman era, who knows what passed for "entertainment." --grecodan

  • As this theater was never used by the Romans (the only theater in Greece to have that distinction -at least according to my tour guide!), the previous last statement re Roman era is inaccurate.
  • Hmm...Not sure what tour guide you were listening to, but he or she wasn't quite up to speed. (A common trait among tour guides.) As noted, the theater was built in the third century. The "theater quarter" became prime real estate for Roman settlers on Delos in the late 2nd century. Things declined a bit for a while, as the political situation was complicated by the decline and rise and decline of Athens, and the increase in pirate raids on the island. In the mid 1st century, the Romans enclosed the entire theater quarter behind a defensive wall, parts of which are still visible today. The theater itself was included in this enclosure. To say they did not use it during this period is nonsense. And given Roman tastes in entertainment, I doubt the "sacredness" of Delos did much to temper what went on in the theater at this time.
