If you visit Delos consider hiking to this hill, you get a view of almost the entire island and a sense for how important the place was historically.

This is Mt. Cynthus, and is probably the reason why Delos became a sacred site. Its conical shape is symbolic of the female breast, and most likely the island was a center of worship for a female deity long before the cult of Apollo arrived. (See the note for the sanctuary of Herakles.) Check out similar sites elsewhere in the classical world. A good one that comes to mind is Mt. Ida, on Crete. That one has a double peak that symbolized the breasts of the Minoan earth goddess.
