The Dixon was the second and final member of the L.Y. Spear Class of Destroyer Tenders and served with the US Navy from 1971 to 1996, mainly out of West Coast and Pacific Ports.
Following her decommissioning she was placed into reserve at Portsmouth, VA until July 21st, 2003 when she was sunk at this location in 2,805 fathoms. The USS Samuel Gompers (AD-37) was sunk just east of the Dixon in the same excercises.
