The Samuel Gompers was the lead ship of her class of Destroyer Tenders and served the US Navy from 1967 to 1995 based out of the West Coast and Pacific ports. Following her decommissioning she was placed into the reserve fleet at Portsmouth, VA where she remained until 2003.
The Gompers was towed to sea in July 2003 and sunk as a target at this location, purportedly taking over 40,000lbs worth of explosives and 16 Harpoon Missiles before she went down.
